The Brick Studio of Graciela Iturbide

A three-storey building and studio in Mexico City captures silence, space and the experience of the emptiness.

Acclaimed Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide commissioned her son and his partner to create a studio space made out of bricks just next to her home in Barrio del Niño Jesús.

Taller de Arquitectura was founded by Mauricio Rocha (son of Graciela and architect Manuel Rocha Diaz) and Gabriella Carrillo. Together the architects wanted to provide a response to the place in which they live and translate the traditions and materials of the places in which they operate in a contemporary way.

So the brick composition and patterns offer simultaneously wartmth and the experience of emptiness.

Constructed from exposed bricks—a common element in Mexican houses—the formal quality of the material changes depending on its usage.

From tessellated flooring to interlocking walls, the studio of bricks feels aesthetically harmonious, but never boring thanks to its innovative design.

Set across three levels, the home achieves balance between indoor and outdoor spaces thanks to an abundance of plants, large windows and two semi-enclosed courtyards.
